Emergency Canning Jars

Button Warning
Many food items we get at the grocery store still come in glass jars. If you notice, most of them have lids with a rubber ring built in and a "button". They have a warning, "Do not purchase if safety button is up". Now these lids and jars are a perfect match for each other and unlike mayonnaise jars of yesteryear, cannot be used with standard canning jar lids. But, as long as that safety button pops back after you depress it, they do reseal when processed like a canning jar.

We had a neighbor who canned more in these reused jars than regular canning jars for years. I'm not advocating you make these odd shaped jars your first choice but in a pinch...they work. I have only used them in steam or hot water bath situations and would definitely NOT recommend them for crops that need pressurizing.

Canning Jars

Because of the odd shapes and sizes, they are the first to get used so I've never been nervous about the longevity of the seal.

Go ahead, save a few jars from the recycle bin. When push comes to shove they will come in handy.
