Old world self-sufficiency in a new world......our pilgrimage to resource efficiency
Gift Giving Is An Indicator.
Posted by Pam Molloy on 1/3/2012 to Preparedness
Gift giving is an indicator of where people are financially as well as mentally.

So, I thought I was the only person in the world who would ask for something like a chainsaw or a pressure canner for Christmas or my birthday but was I ever wrong.
Homemade gifts have been growing exponentially in popularity every year for the last 5 or 6 years. Now we are seeing the growth of necessities as gifts and I'm not talking just socks and underwear.
As we watch the prepper movement grow, we have heard a lot of folks say they have problems getting their spouse on board. More often than not, wives are not as able or willing to invest the time and money required to prepare for disaster. Possibly women are more in denial that anything could that wrong. However, as you can see by my stats, women are making some important purchases such as emergency kits. Ladies are more inclined to purchase (or ask for) equipment to preserve the food they grow while their male counterparts are more likely to buy water filtration and food packaged for long term storage.

Our #1 seller this year - the Deluxe Emergency Backpack Kits - purchased mostly by women.
#2 - water filtration, the most popular was the Katadyn Siphon - purchased mostly by men.
#3 - the 60 serving Grab & Go Entree Kit - purchased mostly by men.
#4 - the 23 Quart Presto Aluminum Pressure Canner - purchased equally by men and women. Followed closely by...
#5 - the American Harvest Gardenmaster Dehydrator - also purchased equally by men and women.
#6 - the Stove Top Popcorn Popper (which had been #1 for 8 years) - purchased exclusively by women.
#7 - Various food packages - purchased almost exclusively by men.

Watching the buying trends and talking with a lot of different people from different walks of life in different circumstances in every region of our country has inspired me to share my observations, things I learned, and information that I found people were lacking.
I will still share accomplishments and stories of trials we've overcome, but it's time to talk more about the changing world and why so many other people are starting to do what we have done.
